Great week for OpenAI this far — they released Codex today, the direct answer to Claude Code, which is a wildly popular agentic coding tool from Anthropic. They finally figured out, that today the vast majority of actual useful agentic tools are coding tools, and want a share of that action.
Obviously there already is GitHub Copilot, but they basically gave that away to Microsoft earlier on. To top it off, they are shipping it with o4-mini by default, which they also released today.
Things are looking good for developers — Sonnet 3.7 is quite happy to eat away my usage credits, o4-mini does that three times cheaper and (allegedly) more intelligently. Do not set it to 'full auto' mode though, we're not there yet in terms of safety and the exposure of your computer.
